Debt validation and disputed accounts
A notice is a starting point for questions.
If you do not recognize the account or amount, preserve the notice and the date you received it. Do not confuse a collection notice with court papers.
Call the office ↗Read the notice carefully
CFPB guidance explains the validation information debt collectors generally must provide, including creditor identity, the amount and a dispute-period end date. Timely written disputes can trigger particular protections. The actual notice and facts need review.
Gather a focused history
Was this account paid, settled, disputed before, or unfamiliar? Is the company contacting the right person? Keep prior statements and correspondence. Listing a claimed debt for screening does not mean you agree that you owe it.
Keep court deadlines separate
A validation dispute is not an answer to a lawsuit. If you received a summons, tell the office about the lawsuit and the dates shown. Calling the office does not transmit a dispute to the collector or file anything with a court.
