Debt-related credit report errors

Identify the entry and the dispute history.

An incorrect balance, mixed identity or account that is not yours needs a clear record. A reporting dispute is different from a promise to improve a credit score.

What to organize

Note the reporting company, creditor or furnisher, the date of the report and the entry you believe is wrong. Keep your dispute correspondence and responses. Do not send an unredacted report or identifying numbers in the initial inquiry.

Two places to check

The CFPB explains that consumers can dispute inaccurate information with the credit reporting company and the company that supplied it. Keep copies and dates. An attorney can review your particular record and what happened after a dispute.

What this service does not promise

A negative entry is not necessarily inaccurate. No result, deletion or score increase is guaranteed. Tell the office if the reporting concern involves identity theft, a collection case or an urgent application, so it can identify the appropriate review.
